These guidelines will help you remove your tracks on your computer. Do not save the address of this website or bookmark it in your website’s browser. Remember the website address instead. Remember that you can remove your tracks by clearing or deleting your browser history OR you can hide your tracks by using private browing. If you have not been using Private Browsing then you should delete the browser cache manually. This is different for each browser. To find instructions specifically for you, please follow the instructions below.
Deleting Browser History
PC Windows - Internet Explorer
- Select the Tools in the menu bar.
- Open the Internet Options Dialog Box and select the General Tab.
- Under Browsing History, click Delete. Check the "Temporary Internet Files", "Cookies", and "History" checkboxes if they are not already and click ‘Delete’.
- Click OK to exit the Internet Options Dialog Box.
PC Windows – Chrome
- Open a Chrome browser window. On the upper right of the toolbar, locate and click on the Chrome
- Select Tools > Clear Browsing Data...
PC Windows – Netscape
Select the Edit in the menu bar, and then select the Preference.
- Under the Category, select Navigator. Then click Clear History.
- Under the Category, select Cache under Advanced. First click the Clear Memory Cache followed by the Clear Disk Cache.
Firefox
- Click "Tools" - "Options"
- When the "Options" dialog box appears, click "Privacy".
- Click the "History" tab.
- Click "Clear Browsing History Now".
- Press "OK" to close the dialog box.
Finally, after completed the above deletions, you should also empty the recycle bin.
Safari (Mac)
- Select History in the menu bar at the top of the screen
- Scroll down to Clear History and select this option
- Select CLEAR when a new window pops up.
Private Browsing
Internet Explorer 9 & 8 (Private browsing)
- Start InPrivate Browsing from the new tab page or the Safety button or it can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+Shift+P
- OR Click “Tools” and the click “InPrivate Browsing”. “InPrivate” will appear at the beginning of address bar
Chrome
To open an incognito window
- Click the spanner icon tools menu on the browser toolbar.
- Select New incognito window.
- A new window will open with the incognito icon in the corner. You can continue browsing as normal in the other window.
- You can also use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Shift+N to open an incognito window.
Mozilla Firefox
You can access private browsing by
- clicking “Tools and Options” or “Tools” > “Start private browsing”
- To clear your history click on “Tools and Options” or “Tools”. Firefox bundles cookies, forms and history under the heading ‘history’. Click the privacy tab, and then on “clear your recent history”. Select the period you want to delete. Click on Details to select cookies, forms etc.
In Firefox other people can view the passwords saved on your system.
- Never save your passwords via your browser when prompted.
- In Firefox you should also check your preferences under the “Preferences” > “Privacy” tab.
Safari
- Select the “Private Browsing” link in the “Safari” (on a Mac) or the Gear/Action menu on Windows.
- To remove history, go to History and click Clear History.
- To remove cookies go to Settings (right hand side), Preferences, Privacy tab and click Remove all Website Data (or Details to select certain sites).
